Children’s dentistry in Sedgley & Dudley

Children’s Dentistry For Happy, Healthy Smiles

A positive start at the dentist can shape how your child feels about their teeth for life. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we keep children’s visits relaxed and friendly, with gentle check-ups, simple advice for parents and preventive care to help protect growing teeth from decay.

Why take your child to the dentist?

Regular visits help us spot tooth decay, crowding or bite problems early, often before your child notices anything. Just as importantly, children get used to the sights and sounds of the dental surgery while there’s nothing to worry about, which helps them feel calm and confident as they grow. It’s best to start as soon as their first teeth appear.

What happens at your child’s dental visit?

  1. 01

    A friendly welcome

We introduce ourselves, explain what we’re going to do in simple, child-friendly words and take things at your child’s pace. Younger children can sit on your lap.

  2. 02

    Checking teeth and gums

Your dentist gently counts and checks your child’s teeth, gums and bite, looking for early signs of decay and keeping an eye on how their adult teeth are developing.

  3. 03

    Preventive care

Where appropriate, we may apply fluoride varnish to help strengthen the enamel, or suggest fissure sealants to protect the deep grooves of the back teeth.

  4. 04

    Tips for parents

We share practical advice on brushing, toothpaste, snacks and drinks, and we’re happy to answer questions about teething, thumb-sucking, dummies or anything else on your mind.

When should my child first see the dentist?

The earlier, the better

It’s a good idea to bring your child for their first visit when their first baby teeth come through, and by their first birthday at the latest. Early visits are usually short and simple - often just a quick look while they sit with you.

Regular check-ups then let us follow your child’s development from baby teeth to adult teeth. If they might benefit from braces or aligners later on, we can talk you through the options and the best time to start - both Dr Mani Reehal and Dr Edmund Acheampong have a particular interest in orthodontics.

Is children’s dental care free on the NHS?

NHS dental treatment is free for children under 18, and for 18 year olds in full-time education. NHS availability varies, so please call us on 01902 675 801 to check NHS availability for your child.

We also see children as private patients, so the whole family can be looked after at our Sedgley practice. Just ask the team about the options when you call.

Nervous about visiting the dentist?

Helping children feel at ease

Children often pick up on how grown-ups feel, so try to talk about the dentist in a positive, matter-of-fact way and avoid words like “hurt” or “scary”. Reading a picture book about a dental visit beforehand can help too.

If your child - or you - feels anxious, just let us know when you book. Our Principal Dentist, Dr Mani Reehal, enjoys helping nervous patients feel at ease, and we’ll take things gently, one small step at a time.

FAQs

Children’s Dentistry FAQs

How can I protect my child’s teeth at home?

Brush twice a day, including last thing at night, with a fluoride toothpaste - a smear for under-3s and a pea-sized amount from age 3. Encourage them to spit rather than rinse, help or supervise brushing until around age 7, and keep sugary snacks and drinks to mealtimes.

What is fluoride varnish?

Fluoride varnish is a quick, simple coating painted onto the teeth to help strengthen the enamel and protect against decay. National guidance recommends it at least twice a year for children from the age of 3, and your dentist will advise if it’s right for your child.

Do baby teeth really matter if they fall out anyway?

Yes. Baby teeth help children eat, speak clearly and smile with confidence, and they hold space for the adult teeth coming through. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection, so it’s important to look after them.

What if my child needs a filling?

If we find decay, we’ll explain what we’ve seen and the options in a calm, reassuring way. Very early decay can sometimes be stopped with fluoride and changes to brushing and diet; where a filling is needed, we’ll do everything we can to keep your child comfortable.

My child has knocked out or chipped a tooth - what should I do?

Call us as soon as possible on 01902 675 801. Don’t try to put a baby tooth back in. If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty and try to put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk and get urgent help. Out of hours, call our 24/7 emergency line on 07748 341 374.

Can my child have braces?

We keep an eye on your child’s teeth and bite at every check-up. If straightening might help, we’ll talk you through the options and the best time to start, which is often once most of the adult teeth have come through.
