Composite bonding in Sedgley & Dudley

Composite Bonding For a Confident, Natural Smile

Composite bonding is a gentle way to improve the look of your smile, often in a single visit. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we use tooth-coloured composite to repair chips, close small gaps and even out the shape of teeth - usually with little or no drilling. It’s a popular first step for patients who want a natural-looking change without veneers or crowns.

Why choose composite bonding?

Bonding is one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available. Because the composite is added to the surface of your tooth, very little - and often none - of your natural tooth needs to be removed. Results are usually visible straight away, it’s generally more affordable than porcelain veneers, and the composite can normally be repaired or refreshed in future if needed.

  • Little or no drilling
  • Often done in one visit
  • Natural, tooth-coloured results

What happens during composite bonding?

  1. 01

    Consultation & planning

Your dentist checks your teeth and gums are healthy, talks through what you’d like to change and may suggest a mock up so you can preview the result first.

  2. 02

    Shade matching

We choose a composite shade to blend with your natural teeth. If you’re thinking about whitening, it’s usually best to do this first, as composite won’t change colour with bleaching.

  3. 03

    Preparing the tooth

The tooth surface is cleaned and gently roughened with a mild conditioning gel so the composite bonds securely. Anaesthetic is not usually needed, but we’ll make sure you’re comfortable.

  4. 04

    Sculpting & setting

Composite is applied in thin layers, sculpted by hand and hardened with a special curing light, building up a natural-looking shape tooth by tooth.

  5. 05

    Polishing & review

Finally, the bonding is refined and polished to a natural lustre. We’ll check your bite, show you the result and explain how to look after it.

Who is composite bonding suitable for?

Bonding can be a great option if you have healthy teeth and gums and would like to improve smaller cosmetic concerns. If your teeth are more crowded, heavily discoloured or broken down, your dentist may recommend straightening, whitening, veneers or crowns instead - or a combination as part of a smile makeover.

Bonding is commonly used for:

  • Chipped or worn edges
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Uneven or slightly misshapen teeth
  • Teeth that look short or small
  • Patches of discolouration that whitening alone won’t improve

How long does composite bonding last?

Looking after your bonding

With good care, composite bonding often lasts several years. Like natural teeth, it can pick up stains from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, and the edges can occasionally chip - but one advantage of composite is that it can usually be polished, repaired or topped up without starting again.

To help your bonding last, keep up with regular check-ups and hygiene appointments, avoid biting hard objects such as pens or ice, and ask your dentist about a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Is composite bonding painful?

Most patients find bonding very comfortable. Because little or no tooth is removed, local anaesthetic is often not needed, although your dentist may use it if a tooth needs more extensive repair. Your teeth may feel slightly different for a day or two while you get used to their new shape.

If you feel anxious about dental treatment, just let us know - we’ll take things at your pace and explain each step as we go. Our associate dentist Dr Edmund Acheampong has a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry and is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

FAQs

Composite Bonding FAQs

How much does composite bonding cost?

Composite bonding is priced per tooth, from £250 per tooth. The final cost depends on how many teeth are treated and how much composite is needed. Your dentist will give you a personalised, itemised estimate after your consultation, and Denplan members pay less, as shown in our fee table.

Is composite bonding available on the NHS?

Bonding for purely cosmetic reasons isn’t usually available on the NHS, so it is provided privately. If a tooth needs repairing for health reasons, such as a break or decay, NHS treatment may be an option - please call to check NHS availability.

How many appointments will I need?

Many bonding cases are completed in a single appointment. If you’re having several teeth treated, or would like to preview your result with a mock up or digital smile design first, you may need a planning visit beforehand.

Does bonding damage my natural teeth?

Bonding is very conservative - usually little or no natural tooth is removed. The surface is gently conditioned so the composite can grip, and bonding can usually be adjusted, repaired or replaced later on if your needs change.

Can I whiten my teeth after bonding?

Composite doesn’t respond to whitening, so if you’d like whiter teeth it’s usually best to whiten first and then match the bonding to your new shade. If you whiten afterwards, your bonding may need replacing to match.

Bonding or veneers - which is better for me?

Bonding is quicker, more affordable and usually needs little or no tooth preparation, while porcelain veneers are generally more stain-resistant and longer-lasting. Your dentist will talk you through the pros and cons for your teeth.
