Gum Disease Treatment For Healthier, Happier Gums

Bleeding gums, bad breath or teeth that feel loose can all be signs of gum disease - one of the most common reasons adults lose teeth. The good news is that it can usually be treated and kept under control. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we’ll help you get your gums back to health and keep them there.

Why treat gum disease early?

In its early stage, called gingivitis, gum disease can usually be reversed with a thorough clean and better home care. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting your teeth is gradually lost. Treating it early helps protect your teeth, freshens your breath and may benefit your general health too.

  • Helps protect your teeth
  • Healthier, calmer gums
  • Fresher breath

How is gum disease treated?

  1. 01

    Gum assessment

Your dentist measures the small spaces between your teeth and gums, checks for bleeding and may take X-rays to see whether any supporting bone has been affected.

  2. 02

    Your treatment plan

We explain how advanced the gum disease is, what treatment you need and roughly how many visits it may take, so you know what to expect and what it will cost.

  3. 03

    Deep cleaning

During periodontal treatment visits, we carefully clean plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smooth the root surfaces, usually with local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.

  4. 04

    Home care support

We show you the best ways to brush and clean between your teeth, because what you do at home every day makes a real difference to how well your gums heal.

  5. 05

    Review and maintenance

A few weeks or months later we re-check your gums to see how they’ve responded, then agree a regular maintenance plan to help keep gum disease under control.

What are the signs of gum disease?

Don’t ignore bleeding gums

Gum disease is often painless, especially in the early stages, so it’s easy to miss. Smoking, diabetes, stress, pregnancy and some medicines can all raise your risk. If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment so we can take a look:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Gums shrinking back from your teeth
  • Teeth that feel loose or a change in your bite
  • Pus or a gum abscess

Is gum treatment painful?

Deep cleaning is usually carried out with local anaesthetic, so most people only feel some pressure and vibration during treatment. Afterwards your gums may feel tender and your teeth a little sensitive for a few days. This usually settles quickly, and normal pain relief can help.

If you’re anxious, please tell us when you book. We’ll explain each step before we start and go at a pace that suits you.

How much does gum disease treatment cost?

On the NHS, gum treatment such as deep cleaning usually falls under Band 2 (£76.60), which also covers any fillings or extractions in the same course of treatment. Please call to check NHS availability.

Privately, periodontal treatments are charged per visit, and they’re included for Denplan Care members. The number of visits you need depends on how many areas are affected, and your dentist will give you an itemised estimate before treatment starts.

FAQs

Gum Disease Treatment FAQs

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis, the early stage, can usually be reversed with professional cleaning and good home care. Periodontitis can’t be fully reversed, as lost bone doesn’t grow back on its own, but it can usually be stabilised and kept under control with treatment and regular maintenance.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on how advanced the gum disease is and how many areas are affected. Some people need one or two periodontal treatment visits, others need more, followed by regular maintenance appointments. Your dentist will advise you at your assessment.

What should I do after treatment?

Your gums may be tender for a few days, so brush gently but thoroughly and keep cleaning between your teeth as we’ve shown you. A little bleeding at first is normal and should reduce as your gums heal. Avoiding smoking will help them recover.

Does smoking affect gum disease?

Yes - smoking is one of the biggest risk factors. It can also hide the warning sign of bleeding gums and make treatment less effective. Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your gums, and we’re happy to point you towards support.

Is gum disease linked to other health problems?

Research has linked gum disease with other conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. Looking after your gums is good for your mouth and may help your general health too.

What if I already have loose or missing teeth?

We’ll focus first on getting the gum disease under control. Once your gums are stable, your dentist can talk you through options for replacing any missing teeth, such as bridges, dentures or dental implants.
