Tooth extractions in Sedgley & Dudley

Tooth Extractions Gentle, Caring Treatment

We always try to save natural teeth, but sometimes removing a tooth is the kindest option for your oral health. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, we understand that an extraction can feel daunting, so our dentists make sure you are comfortable, fully numb and relaxed at every stage of your treatment.

Why might a tooth need to be removed?

An extraction is usually only recommended when a tooth cannot be saved or is causing problems for the teeth around it. After a thorough examination and a look at your dental history, your dentist will explain why removal is advised and talk you through any alternatives, so you can make the decision that feels right for you.

  • Relieves pain and infection
  • Protects neighbouring teeth
  • Calm, reassuring team

What happens during a tooth extraction?

  1. 01

    Assessment

Your dentist examines the tooth, usually takes an X-ray to check the roots, and explains the procedure, the costs and any alternatives before you decide.

  2. 02

    Numbing the area

A local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth and surrounding gum. Your dentist checks it is thoroughly numb before starting, so you should feel pressure but not pain.

  3. 03

    Removing the tooth

The tooth is gently loosened and removed. Teeth that are broken down or have curved roots may need a surgical extraction, which your dentist will explain beforehand.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

Your dentist makes sure the area is clean and a blood clot has formed, then gives you clear aftercare advice to help the socket heal well.

When are extractions needed?

There are a number of reasons your dentist may recommend removing a tooth. Whatever the reason, they will always discuss it with you first.

  • Severe decay or gum disease
  • Dental trauma caused by an accident
  • Impacted teeth - particularly wisdom teeth
  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Orthodontic reasons, as part of a teeth straightening plan

Is having a tooth out painful?

Nervous about treatment?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic before treatment, so most people feel pressure and pushing rather than pain. Afterwards it is normal to have some soreness and swelling for a few days, which over-the-counter pain relief usually helps with.

If you feel anxious, please tell us when you book. Our Principal Dentist, Dr Mani Reehal, has a particular interest in oral surgery and enjoys helping nervous patients feel at ease.

Looking after yourself after an extraction

Good aftercare helps the socket heal and reduces the risk of a painful dry socket. Your dentist will give you personal advice on the day, and the simple tips below usually help.

If you have heavy bleeding, increasing pain or swelling after a few days, please call us on 01902 675 801. Once healed, your dentist can talk you through replacing the gap with a bridge, denture or dental implant.

  • Avoid rinsing, hot drinks and strenuous exercise for the rest of the day
  • Don’t smoke or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours, and ideally longer
  • Eat soft foods and chew on the other side
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salty water after meals

FAQs

Tooth Extractions FAQs

How much does a tooth extraction cost?

Private extractions are from £165, with surgical and wisdom tooth extractions costing more. On the NHS, extractions are covered by Band 2 (£76.60) - please call to check NHS availability. You will always be given a personalised estimate first.

How long does it take?

A straightforward extraction is often quite quick once the area is numb, although surgical extractions can take longer. Your dentist will let you know how long to allow for your appointment.

Do you remove wisdom teeth?

Yes, we carry out wisdom tooth and surgical extractions. Your dentist will assess the tooth and its position with an X-ray and explain whether removal is advisable. Occasionally a more complex case may need a referral.

Can I drive home after an extraction?

Extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic, so most people are able to drive home afterwards. Your dentist will advise you if anything about your treatment means you should arrange a lift.

Should I replace the missing tooth?

It depends on where the tooth was. Replacing a gap can help with chewing, appearance and stopping other teeth moving. Your dentist can talk you through bridges, dentures and implants.
