Dental Crowns For Strong, Natural-Looking Teeth

Whether a tooth is cracked, broken down or weakened by a large filling, a dental crown can restore its strength and appearance. At Highview Dental Practice in Sedgley, Dudley, our dentists will talk you through the different crown materials and help you choose one that matches the colour and shape of your natural teeth.

Why choose a dental crown?

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is typically used when damage is too large for a filling, after root canal treatment or to improve a badly discoloured or misshapen tooth. Crowns add strength, durability and stability, helping you bite and chew comfortably again with confidence.

  • Strengthens weakened teeth
  • Natural-looking finish
  • Custom-made to fit

What happens when you have a crown fitted?

Most crowns need two appointments, with time in between for your crown to be made in a dental laboratory.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Your dentist examines the tooth, may take X-rays and explains the crown materials available, the costs and whether any preliminary restoration is needed first.

  2. 02

    Preparing the tooth

Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is carefully shaped to make room for the crown. An impression or scan is then taken and the shade matched to your teeth.

  3. 03

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown is usually fitted to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being made by the dental laboratory.

  4. 04

    Fitting your crown

At your second visit the temporary is removed and your new crown is checked for fit, bite and colour before being fixed firmly in place.

What can a crown help with?

Crowns are one of the most versatile restorations in dentistry. They are designed to:

  • Strengthen broken-down, cracked or heavily filled teeth
  • Protect a tooth after root canal treatment
  • Improve the appearance of discoloured or misshapen teeth
  • Help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place
  • Restore a dental implant

Materials to suit you

Crowns can be made from metal, porcelain or a combination of the two. We offer porcelain bonded crowns, metal-free Zirconium, Lava and Emax crowns for a highly natural look, and gold crowns, which are very hard-wearing and often used on back teeth.

The best choice depends on where the tooth is, how much it has to withstand when you bite and how important appearance is to you. Your dentist will give you honest advice on the material best suited to your tooth.

How long does a crown last?

With good care, crowns typically last between 10 and 15 years, and often longer. How long yours lasts will depend on the material, your bite and how well you look after your teeth and gums.

Brush twice a day, clean carefully between your teeth and around the gum line, and keep up with regular check-ups and hygiene visits. If you grind your teeth, your dentist may suggest a night guard to help protect your crown.

FAQs

Dental Crowns FAQs

How much does a dental crown cost?

Private crowns are from £595 for a porcelain bonded crown, with metal-free and gold crowns costing more. On the NHS, crowns are covered by Band 3 (£332.10) - please call to check NHS availability. Your dentist will give you a personalised estimate first.

Does having a crown fitted hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic while it is prepared, so most people feel little more than pressure. The tooth may feel a little sensitive for a few days afterwards, which usually settles on its own.

Will my crown look natural?

Modern porcelain and metal-free crowns are shade-matched to your neighbouring teeth, so they blend in with your smile. Your dentist will check the colour and shape with you before your crown is fitted.

What should I do if my crown comes loose?

Keep the crown safe and call us on 01902 675 801. In many cases a crown can be refixed. Avoid chewing on that side until you have been seen.

Is a crown or a veneer better for me?

Veneers cover only the front of a tooth and are mainly cosmetic, while a crown covers the whole tooth and adds strength. Your dentist will advise which is most suitable for your tooth.
