Dental Hygiene & Stain Removal For a Fresher, Brighter Smile

Even with great brushing at home, plaque and tartar build up in places that are hard to reach. A professional hygiene appointment at our Sedgley practice gently cleans these away, helping to protect your gums and lift everyday stains from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. You’ll leave with teeth that feel smooth, clean and fresh.

Why have a professional clean?

Tartar is hardened plaque that can’t be removed with a toothbrush. Left in place, it irritates the gums and can lead to gum disease, bad breath and, over time, loose teeth. Regular hygiene visits remove it, keep your gums healthy and give you personalised tips to make your cleaning at home even more effective.

  • Helps prevent gum disease
  • Lifts surface stains
  • Fresher, cleaner breath

What happens at a hygiene appointment?

  1. 01

    Checking your gums

We look at your gums and the areas where plaque and tartar tend to collect, so the clean can be focused where you need it most.

  2. 02

    Removing plaque and tartar

Using a combination of ultrasonic and hand instruments, we gently clean above and just below the gum line to remove hardened deposits your toothbrush can’t shift.

  3. 03

    Airflow stain removal

If you’ve chosen Airflow, a fine, controlled spray of air, water and powder is used to lift surface stains and plaque from your teeth and the spaces between them.

  4. 04

    Polish and advice

Your teeth are polished to leave them feeling smooth, then we share simple tips on brushing, cleaning between your teeth and diet to help keep them that way.

What is Airflow stain removal?

Gentle, effective stain removal

Airflow is an air-polishing treatment that uses a controlled spray of air, water and a fine powder to clean the surfaces of your teeth. It’s particularly good at lifting staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco, and at reaching tricky areas between teeth and around crowns or brace wires.

Airflow can be added to a hygiene appointment, or you can choose our hygiene package, which combines a 20 minute hygiene appointment, Airflow and Blanc One for an extra-bright finish.

Stain removal brings your teeth back to their own natural colour, but it won’t change their underlying shade. If you’d like a lighter shade, ask us about teeth whitening.

Is a hygiene appointment painful?

Most people find a hygiene appointment comfortable. You may feel some scraping or vibration, and if your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive, parts of the clean may feel a little tender.

Just let us know how you’re feeling - we can slow down, take breaks and talk to you about options to keep you comfortable. Healthy gums are less tender, so regular visits usually feel easier over time.

How often should I have a hygiene appointment?

Many patients benefit from a clean every six months, alongside their check-up, while those with a history of gum problems or heavy staining may be advised to come more often. Your dentist will recommend what’s right for you.

We offer hygiene appointments of 20, 30 or 40 minutes, depending on how much cleaning is needed. On the NHS, a scale and polish is included in Band 1 (£27.90) where clinically needed - please call to check NHS availability. Airflow stain removal is a private treatment.

FAQs

Dental Hygiene & Stain Removal FAQs

Will a hygiene appointment whiten my teeth?

It can make your teeth look noticeably brighter by removing surface stains, especially with Airflow. However, it won’t change the natural colour of your teeth. If you’d like them lighter than their natural shade, teeth whitening is the treatment to ask about.

How long does a hygiene appointment take?

We offer 20, 30 and 40 minute hygiene appointments. Your dentist will suggest the right length based on how much tartar and staining there is and the health of your gums.

Is Airflow safe for my teeth?

Airflow is a widely used and gentle way to remove surface stains and plaque. We’ll check it’s suitable for you first - for example, if you have very sensitive teeth or certain gum conditions, a different approach may be recommended.

Can I have a scale and polish on the NHS?

Yes. Where your dentist feels it’s clinically needed, a scale and polish is part of NHS Band 1 (£27.90). Cosmetic stain removal such as Airflow is private. NHS availability varies, so please call 01902 675 801 to check.

Does Denplan cover hygiene appointments?

Hygiene appointments aren’t included in the plans, but Denplan Care members pay a reduced fee, and Denplan Essentials members save on Airflow and the hygiene package. The fee table above shows the prices for each.

How can I keep my teeth stain-free for longer?

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily and rinse with water after tea, coffee or red wine. Cutting down on smoking helps too, and regular hygiene visits keep on top of any staining that does build up.
